Storming weekend for Dundee Stars

Dundee Stars made it a four-point weekend thanks to a 5-1 win over Elite League newcomers Manchester Storm on Tayside.

The home side were only 1-0 ahead after the opening session despite outshooting the visitors 8-5.

They dominated the shots on goal count in the second with 15 against seven in return, and netted two goals.

Coach Marc Lefebvre was hoping for maximum points this weekend and gained a platform with the 4-1 win at Fife Flyers on Saturday.

On Sunday night, Kevin Hart opened the account for the home side after seven minutes, and Riley Wetmore added to it on the power play 20 minutes later.

Bobby Chaumont, Stars’ assistant coach, scored three minutes later.

Matt Caria scored for Storm three minutes into the final session.

Doug Clarkson slotted the home side’s fourth after 45 minutes.

Mikael Lidhammar added the fifth four minutes later to end the contest.

Justin Faryna assisted in three of Dundee’s five goals, and the homesters outshot the English side 30-22.

Todd Dutiaume, Fife Flyers’ under-pressure coach, had called for an improvement from his misfiring squad and received an immediate response.

The Kirkcaldy club, who anchor the league, took a 4-0 lead after two periods at Edinburgh Capitals.

Shayne Stockton netted after five minutes, with Stephen Gunn adding to it two minutes later.

Danny Stewart, Fife’s associate coach, made it 3-0 on a power play after 25 minutes. Philippe Paquet added a fourth three minutes later.

Then, the roof fell in. Jacob Johnston scored for Edinburgh after 39 minutes, and again four minutes later.

Trevor Gerling upped the heat on flagging Fife with a third after 44 minutes, and Ryan Hayes popped in the equaliser with less than five minutes left.

Capitals’ Canadian-born left-wing Paul Zanette broke Fife hearts with the winner a minute into sudden-death overtime.

In last night’s other game, Sheffield Steelers beat Braehead Clan 4-3 after sudden-death overtime.
