A British record in the World Cup Series has set Dundee speed skater Murray Cochrane up for the new year.
The 22-year-old Olympic hopeful competed in his first events at this level in China earlier this month.
In the 1500 metres he reached the semi-finals and came 17th out of 47, taking a second off the British record previously held by Jack Whelbourne.
And in the 1000 metres Cochrane finished 24th out of 47, shaving two seconds off his personal best.
The next big event for the GB short track team is the Star Class competition at the UK’s National Ice Centre between January 8 and 10.
The European Championships follow later in the month at Sochi’s Olympic rink.
The Head Coach GB Short Track, Nicky Gooch, said: “The World Cups represented a key point in our progression towards the 2018 Olympics in Pyeonchang.
“In addition to providing us with the opportunity to expose the athletes on the Podium Potential level of the World Class Programme to this level of competition it also enabled us to expose them to the challenges presented by long haul travel.
“The experience that they as individuals and we have a team have gleaned from this will enhance our preparation for Pyeonchang.”
