Dundee Stars v Fife Flyers: Sacchetti is sudden-death hero for fired-up Fifers

Nico Sacchetti was the hero for Fife Flyers on Sunday night when he scored a sudden-death penalty for his side to secure a valuable 4-3 win over Dundee Stars.

His score made it a maximum-point weekend for the Kirkcaldy club after they beat Braehead Clan on Saturday.

Fife caught Stars cold when TJ Caig netted their opener after 98 seconds, with Danny Stewart following up with a second after two minutes. It took Dundee until the 25th minute to score, with former Fife star Bobby Chaumont netting.

Doug Clarkson levelled matters 11 minutes later and Chaumont slotted the home side’s third after 45 minutes.

Fife shrugged off that disappointment and Ryan Dingle levelled with less than three minutes left, with former Stars hit-man Nico Sacchetti involved in the build-up. The goal sent the game into sudden death overtime and it was Flyers that showed first, with Justin Fox firing a Dingle pass just over the bar.

The sides still could not be separated so the game went into penalty shots.

Caig and Fox failed to count for Flyers and Lou Dickenson and Curtis Leinweber also missed for Dundee. Dingel and Chaumont both scored to keep the tension going and take the penalty shots session into sudden death. Dickenson’s shot was saved and Dingle missed. Then Brett Switzer hit the post for Stars and Matt Delahey missed as did Leinweber.

Up stepped Sacchetti to win the game.

Former Fife Flyer Ned Lukacevic kept his cool last night to slot home a game-winning penalty shot to end Edinburgh Capitals’ losing streak with a 4-3 win over Sheffield Steelers.

Braehead Clan beat Cardiff Devils 3-1.

Meanwhile, Stars’ bosses splashed the cash to ensure their squad had every chance of success at Cardiff Devils.

Their gesture of an overnight stop in Sheffield on Friday night to break the nine-hour journey was repaid in full when Stars edged Cardiff in a penalty-shot thriller in front of 2,500 fans on Saturday.

Curtis Leinweber delivered the game-winning shot the forward the only scorer out of six players. Cardiff had twice been ahead in a tight game in which Dundee were outshot 34-30.

Stars’ goals came from Lou Dickenson and John Dolan.

Todd Dutiaume’s decision to call a time-out after Braehead Clan went 2-0 ahead after 12 minutes proved a masterstroke as Flyers responded with five goals to down the Glasgow side 5-2 on Saturday.

Stephen Gunn sparked the comeback followed by strikes from Justin Fox, Kyle Haines, newcomer Nico Sacchetti and Nicholas Rioux.

Edinburgh Capitals lost their ninth straight league game with an 8-2 defeat at Nottingham Panthers.

Meanwhile, Connor Duncan and Liam Cassidy both claimed trebles last night as Kirkcaldy Kestrels mauled Dundee Tigers 8-1 at Kirkcaldy in the Scottish National League.
