Doug Clarkson claimed a treble on Sunday night as Dundee Stars put their shock home reverse to Edinburgh Capitals behind them to bounce back and claim a 7-2 Elite League victory away to Manchester Storm.
Clarkson netted a goal in the middle session and two in the third to make it an unhappy night for the league new boys, who had thrashed Edinburgh Capitals 8-1 in their last home game.
The result in Altrincham was all the more significant as Stars, who have moved up to second place, were 2-0 down after less than 14 minutes.
Matt Paton fired the home side ahead after 11 minutes and Paul Phillips increased their advantage two minutes later. It took Stars six minutes to open their account, Riley Wetmore adding the final touch, and Clarkson scored his first six minutes into the middle period.
Lou Dickenson put the visitors ahead four minutes later and assistant player-coach Bobby Chaumont added a fourth.
Clarkson scored five minutes into the third on the power play and completed his hat-trick 41 seconds later.
Wetmore completed the rout with his second less than four minutes from time.
On Saturday Capitals shocked fans at Dundee Ice Arena by ending a five-game losing streak. The Murrayfield men were 2-0 down to goals from Brett Switzer after 16 minutes and Clarkson after 32 minutes.
But four unanswered goals stunned home fans. Paul Zanette popped in Capitals’ first and then three goals hit the Dundee rigging in five nightmare minutes of the third period, with Kyle Bigos and Ryan Hayes (2) scoring.
At Kirkcaldy, Fife Flyers went down 5-1 to Brahead Clan in a Challenge Cup clash last night.
Former Edinburgh Capitals star Bari McKenzie opened the scoring after nine minutes with former Dundee Comets player Jordan Cownie assisting.
Dundee-born Cownie set up McKenzie’s second 12 seconds later before Brendan Brooks made it 3-0.
Marcus Gotz popped in a fourth and Scott Pitt netted the fifth after only 36 seconds of the final session. Patrick Cullen claimed Fife’s consolation after 41 minutes.
Also last night, Edinburgh Capitals lost 3-0 at home to Braehead Clan.
