British GT champion Jonny Adam has capped a superb year by bagging a drive in the legendary Daytona 24 Hours.
Just weeks after the 31-year-old Fifer scooped the Avon Tyres British GT Championship with Beechdean Aston Martin team owner Andrew Howard, Adam has been confirmed as the victor in the prized Sunoco Whelen Challenge.
Although well ahead in the standings for the coveted seat in the legendary endurance classic, Aston Martin factory driver Adam had faced a nervous wait on the sidelines to see if rivals in other series could overhaul him.
Adam will head to Daytona in January for the official test days ahead of his second outing at the event, but his first in the premier prototype category behind the wheel of the front-running Action Express-entered Whelen-sponsored Chevrolet Corvette DP.
“I am delighted to win the Sunoco Whelen Challenge this year, which has topped off a successful season after winning the GT3 British GT Championship,” said Adam.
“I am looking forward to heading back to Daytona and racing with Action Express in the #31 Whelen Daytona Prototype.”
Anders Hildebrand, managing director of Anglo American Oil Company, who run the Sunoco Whelen Challenge, said: “Jonny Adam did an outstanding job for Beechdean in British GT this season.
“He scored highly with points from pole positions, fastest laps and race results, not only keeping British GT challengers at bay but also keen challengers from Radical Enduro and Radical European Masters.
The traditional Roar Before the 24 test days take place on January 8-10 before the race itself, one of the world’s biggest endurance events, gets under way on January 28-31.
