Elena Baltacha saw her Aegon International charge ended, with the Wimbledon wild card falling just short against world No 10 Maria Kirilenko.
The 29-year-old showed fighting spirit against the Russian sixth seed but ended up losing 4-6 6-4 6-3 over two hours 33 minutes.
Baltacha was joined by Laura Robson and Heather Watson in the last 16 the first time three British women have reached round two of the singles since 1991.
But Robson crashed out to former world No 1 Caroline Wozniacki, losing 6-4 6-4. And Heather Watson got off to a frustrating start against Russian Elena Vesnina and never recovered as she went out 6-1 3-6 6-2.
Meanwhile British teenager Kyle Edmund exited the men’s singles after a plucky 7-6 (7/5) 7-6 (7/3) defeat to second seed Gilles Simon. Simon’s reward is a quarter-final clash with Bernard Tomic, who overcame Julien Benneteau.
Top-seeded Milos Raonic bowed out to Ivan Dodig 6-2 7-6 (9/7), who will face Fabio Fognini.
