MARTIN ADAMS suffered a shock BDO World Darts Championships first-round exit when he lost 3-2 to Dutch teenager Jimmy Hendriks.
The 52-year-old three-time champion struggled with his doubles throughout and joined holder Christian Kist on the sidelines after the Dutchman’s Saturday loss to Robbie Green.
Hendriks, an 18-year-old debutant, capitalised on Adams’ doubles struggles to secure a place in the second round.
Adams’s exit means there will be a new winner this year, as all the former champions who started the tournament have been knocked out.
Top seed Stephen Bunting advanced to the second round thanks to a 3-2 win over Jamie Wilson.
The 27-year-old Liverpudlian now faces Darryl Fitton.
Steve Douglas is also through, less than a month after suffering a heart attack.
The 35-year-old from Gillingham beat Scotsman Gary Stone 3-1 and will now face Tony O’Shea.
Another Scot to bow out was Mark Barilli, who lost 3-2 to Scott Mitchell.
Bobby George’s son Richie made a winning debut, beating Dave Prins 3-2 on Saturday.
