The last thing you could have said about Dundee High Rugby so far is that they have imposed themselves on matches with narrow wins, a defeat and a draw but it all finally clicked at Mayfield on Saturday.
Biggar were put to the sword as the hosts found the ruthless edge to their game. Dundee slammed in 28 second half points to clinch a highly convincing 51-25 BT National Division 1 win.
No 8 Donald Sangster made a welcome return to the side and celebrated with two tries, full-back Nick Alston, wing Ross Lemon, No10 Harry Miller and sub Callum Bowie added tries and Miller took his tally to 26 with six conversions and three penalties.
“Six cracking tries shows how on top we were in this game, in a strong team performance,” said coach Colin Robertson.
“Biggar grabbed a couple of late tries at the death, which we are annoyed about, and we feel there should have been more tries from us.”
Dundee now move into third spot behind GHA and Selkirk and with next week’s opponents in Glasgow a toiling Hillhead-Jordanhill outfit, the chance is there for Robertson’s men.
In Division 2 it looks increasingly likely to be a case of who will be second as Howe of Fife maintained their lead at the top with a four-point gap opening up.
Their 66-19 win over Haddington was as merciless as it was convincing.
Ian Wilson was executioner-in-chief for Howe this week with four tries, Bob Douglas grabbed a couple and there was one each for Stewart Lathangie, Angus Guthrie and John Lawrie. Dom Martin added eight conversions from 10 attempts.
Aberdeenshire got their season off the ground with a welcome 33-29 win over visitors Greenock to bag their first win of the season.
It was looking good for Kirkcaldy in the early stages of their clash at Beveridge Park against Cartha QP and, trailing only 19-15 at half-time, they were still well in the game. However, Cartha romped in 35 points in the second half to win 54-29.
Small consolation for Kirkcaldy was that they collected a try bonus with touchdowns from Mark Wallace, who collected a couple, Quentin Sanft and Gav McKenzie.
Kirkcaldy now lie fifth in the table with that try bonus keeping them a point ahead of Cartha.
A bonus point win by 33-15 at Murrayfield Wanderers takes Perthshire into the top half of the table with wins from their last three outings.
They led 23-10 at half-time and another couple of tries after the break clinched the try bonus with Ian Whittle claiming a hat-trick with one each for Dan Rae, Declan O’Brian and Adam Pattinson. Andy Whitelaw kicked a penalty.
That sixth spot for Perthshire sees them only a point behind East Kilbride and five away from RHC in second.
Dunfermline, however, were unable to break their duck as they went down 27-10 at Dalziel.
