It was always going to be a tough task for Dundee High Rugby to face Premiership outfit Currie at Malleny Park in the second round of the BT Cup.
They went down 29-12 but coach Colin Robertson was not too despondent.
“We had five players out injured so I would say that given the side we had out, I was happy with the performance,” Robertson said.
Eighteen-year-old wing Roman Joy and skipper Donald Sangster had the touchdowns for Dundee but the coach felt that it could have been closer.
“It was a creditable performance which would have been better reflected in the scoreline if we had been a bit more successful with our kicks,” said Robertson. “But we didn’t take our chances with the boot so we can have no complaints.”
Dundee have no game this week but next up in BT National 1 is a trip to promotion contenders GHA, whose win over Selkirk in the cup last Saturday was the first defeat inflicted on the Philiphaugh outfit this season.
It was fairly comfortable progression into the third round of the cup for Howe of Fife with a 27-0 win over Whitecraigs at Duffus Park.
Two tries from hooker Conor Dow and one each from Steven Martin and Fraser Clark, with Dom Martin adding two conversions and a drop goal, did the damage for Howe in a win described by coach Gary Horne as ‘job done’.
“Wow we hope to get a big side to Duffus Park in the third round,” said Horne.
Howe are idle next week and can only sit and watch as Hamilton take on Cartha Queens Park in their re-scheduled BT National 2 contest.
Hamilton, Mussel-burgh and Howe are level on 40 points and Hamilton look certain to go clear at the top after next week’s game.
The following week, another belter looms.
Musselburgh and Howe clash at Stoneyhill on November 29 and, with Musselburgh giving themselves a huge boost with a 47-8 win over Peebles in the cup last Saturday, they will be buzzing come the clash with Howe which could have a massive bearing on the title and play-off spot.
