BT Caledonia League: Morgan Academy FP firmly in control as they open league campaign in style

Morgan Academy FP raced from the blocks in the opening week of action in BT Caledonia League Division 1.

With Andy Clark and Jamie Hughan back in harness as a half-back partnership after both spending time in the Southern Hemisphere, Morgan were firmly in control of proceedings throughout the 80 minutes.

And they had few problems dealing with the challenge of Ellon, eventually easing to a 66-7 win.

Strathmore also made a winning start to the campaign, claiming all five league points as they saw off Hillfoots 24-15 at Inchmacoble

Fraser Cameron, Jordan Rae, Tom Cargill and Colin Strachan all touched down for the home side while Fraser Mackay and Kieran Scoular each kicked a conversion. Andrew Hamilton and David Cree were try scorers for Hillfoots, while Gregor Manson booted a conversion and a penalty.

Meanwhile, Glenrothes avenged their defeat in last season’s RBS Bowl final when they squeezed past Highland 24-22 in a tense encounter at Carleton Park that saw the referee issue five yellow cards.

With captain Kenny Christie unavailable, new father, Daryl Warrender, was handed responsibility for leading the side. And his colleagues made it a double celebration for the stand-in skipper.

Glenrothes led for most of the match but fell behind with seven minutes to play.

However, Shaun Gray scored his second try of the afternoon to snatch the victory for the Fifers.

There was also a try apiece for Cammy Goodall and Gareth Hargreaves and Connor Baxter added two conversions.

Harris FP made an impressive start to their Division Two campaign. The Elliot Road men returned from their assignment at Kinross with a 41-5 win to their credit.

Owen McDonald led the way with three of his side’s seven tries, while Joe Abbott touched twice and there was one score each for Andy Clarkson and Mike McDonald.

The other points for Harris came from conversions, with Calum Bruce on target twice and Abbott also adding an extra two points.

Carnoustie had tries from Craig Dawson, Lewis Thoms and Nathan Bowles plus 11 points from the boot of Niall Swanson in a 26-11 win for Jim Michie’s men at home to his previous side Panmure.

In Division 3 (Midlands East), Arbroath beat Fife Southern 36-17, while Stobswell started their campaign with a trip to Anstruther to face Waid Academy FP and returned with a 45-15 result to their credit.

Meanwhile, Kirkcaldy seconds saw off their counterparts from Glenrothes by a 22-7 scoreline.

In Division 3 (Midlands West), Crieff and Strathearn welcomed Perthshire seconds to the Braidhaugh, with the visitors emerging 42-27 winners.
