Scotland have made 11 changes for their second Rugby World Cup warm-up game against Italy at Turin on Saturday, as Vern Cotter looks to run the rule over the entire squad before the tournament proper.
Grant Gilchrist will skipper the side and is one of only four players retained from last week’s 28-22 loss to Ireland in Dublin, with Sean Lamont back for his 95th cap, Richie Vernon staying at centre and Greig Tonks remaining in the side, but at full-back rather than fly-half.
There will be three new caps from the start in hooker Stuart McInally, imported open-side John Hardie and Glasgow wing Rory Hughes, who has barely more experience than the newly arrived New Zealander with only one starting appearance for Glasgow last season.
McInally will make his first start in the front row having been close to being capped three years ago in the back row, when he was an unused replacement.
There is likely to be two further new caps off the bench with South African-born WP Nel, newly qualified after completing as three-year residency, and wing Damien Hoyland set to make their first appearances.
Scotland have a new set of half-backs with Duncan Weir and Sam Hidalgo-Clyne teaming up, while Alasdair Strokosch gains a recall after missing much of the Six Nations.
