All it takes in a league as tight as BT National Division 1 is a couple of results and the whole picture changes.
So it was on Saturday with Dundee High earning a nerve- jangling win over Watsonians and Marr’s unbeaten run coming to an end at The Gytes.
Those results mean that only six points separate the top five sides and both Howe of Fife and Dundee High move into challenging positions with a solid run of games now through to mid-December.
There was never anything in it at Myreside with Dundee only 24-22 ahead at half-time and when the final whistle loomed, Watsonians had tied the score at 37-37.
Given that it had been a bruising battle, both sides would have probably settled for that but the visitors dug just that bit deeper and with the final play of the game, Blair Cochrane grabbed the crucial touch down for a 42-37 win.
Dundee nicked five points to Watsonians two and in fifth spot, are six points off the lead.
One point better of are Howe of Fife who put the nightmare of Fullerton Woods behind them (no, not a slasher movie, that is where Marr play!) and picked up a vital win against Aberdeen Grammar Rugby by 18-10 at Duffus Park.
Although never out of sight, Howe held a comfortable lead with tries from Steven Player and Murray Calcutt with Angus Guthrie adding a conversion and two penalties.
Aberdeen had only an Alex Haggard penalty on the board until Ali Mackie scored seven minutes from the end but by then, Howe had four points in the bag. That pulls them up to fourth spot in the table with Musselburgh, Watsonians and Marr above them.
Best to draw a veil over Kirkcaldy’s performance at Laigh Bent where BT National League Division 2 leaders Hamilton sniffed blood as the toiling Fifers arrived and extracted it by the bucketful in a 98-14 win that leaves Kirkcaldy second bottom of the table.
Top v third at Park Farm was always going to produce a cracker but home advantage for leaders Dumfries tipped the balance as they ran out 22-9 winners over Perthshire. Zach Zropf kicked the Shire points.
