Scottish University Cup: St Andrews produce big upset
ByThe Courier Reporter
A young St Andrews University side produced a notable upset and reclaimed the historic Scottish University Cup by beating Edinburgh for the first time since 2008 in the annual fixture in Richmond.
St Andrews fielded four freshers in their side but prevailed 24-15 in what is the oldest annual university match in rugby.
It was first contested 150 years ago and pre-dating the high-profile Oxford-Cambridge Varsity match.
The match relocated to London Scottish’s Athletic Ground three years ago to augment the occasion and bring in more alumni from both universities, and this was the first time St Andrews had won since the move.
SRU vice-president Ian Rankin was on hand to present the cup to winning captain Jeremy Gordon.
