Glasgow have picked an attacking line-up as they try to topple European champions Toulon and book an interest in Europe into the spring.
Long-serving back-rower James Eddie and Scotland fly-half Ruiradh Jackson will become the 15th and 16th Warriors to pass 100 games for the team as Glasgow hope to get a consolation quarter-final place in the second-tier Amlin Cup by claiming second place in Pool Two.
However, a win against the mighty Toulon who are travelling with most of their star names in their squad is needed, plus Exeter need to beat Cardiff at the Arms Park to give the Warriors a chance of some European action in April for the first time since 2006.
Any thought that the European champions might show up with a second string on Saturday at Scotstoun with the pool already secured have been dispelled with all fit personnel in the squad, including Jonny Wilkinson, Matt Giteau, Bakkies Botha and Drew Mitchell.
But the Warriors are relishing the challenge of taking on the champions in front of a sold-out crowd on their own pitch, said head coach Gregor Townsend.
“We saw just how good a side Toulon are when we played them in October and they pose a dangerous attacking threat all over the pitch, as well as being very strong defensively,” he said.
“But we still have a chance of qualifying for the Amlin Challenge Cup and that is a big motivation for us.
“It will be a fantastic occasion welcoming the Heineken Cup champions to Glasgow on Saturday and it will be a special day for both Ruaridh and James.
“They continue to be great servants for the club and thoroughly deserve to join our elite group of centurions.”
Jackson is a well-known figure in Scottish and European rugby but Eddie might be the real heart and soul of the Warriors, having been at Glasgow in some form since 2004.
Although just a third of his 100 appearances for the Warriors have been starts and it appeared as if he was about to be let go on at least two occasions, his firebrand style and physicality have kept him at the club and made him a huge favourite with Warriors fans.
Injuries to Tommy Seymour and DTH van der Merwe mean that Niko Matawalu returns to the starting line-up for the first time in a month on the wing, with Henry Pyrgos partnering Jackson at half-back.
Sean Lamont, who made a try-scoring return from injury in the victory over Exeter last week and celebrated his 33rd birthday on Wednesday, goes into the centre.
But there’s more intrigue on the bench where Richie Vernon, capped 20 times for Scotland in the back row, could start a new pro career as a back. The pacy former High School of Dundee pupil’s switch from flanker to centre is still a work in progress, but he could see action against Toulon’s stellar three-quarter line.
Chris Fusaro remains as captain after his successful stint down in Devon last week.
