More than half a million pounds of cash seized from criminals will be used to improve rugby facilities in Scotland.

Kirkcaldy and Perthshire rugby clubs are among those that will benefit. Kirkcaldy will get £50,000 to upgrade its floodlights and develop a winter training area.

Perthshire has been awarded £39,360 for lights and pitch improvements.

The money comes out of a £550,000 Rugby Facilities Fund pot, with 10 other Scottish rugby clubs benefiting.

Scottish Rugby’s chief executive Jock Millican said: “We are delighted that 12 of our grassroots clubs have secured facilities investment funding through the partnership between Scottish Rugby, sportscotland and the Scottish Government’s Cashback for Communities initiative.”

Each club was successful in its application, having shown a track record of growing the game at junior, youth and adult levels. Priority was given to the projects which primarily benefited young people.

The Rugby Facilities Fund was unveiled by Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill in February, alongside a £2.4 million extension to the CashBack funding given to Scottish Rugby to drive the growth of the game.

Mr MacAskill said: “The excitement surrounding Scottish rugby is building as our national team prepares to kick off their World Cup campaign within the next two weeks.”
