Angling for a better deal, dodgy puns and great Angus produce all coming up in Alex Salmond’s Courier column

He may not be Spartacus, but Alex Salmond loves Angus asparagus
He may not be Spartacus, but Alex Salmond loves Angus asparagus

“I’m asparagus!” “No, I’m asparagus!” Working as a waiter before picking up a pen professionally, I once elicited a death stare from a chef thanks to that terrible Spartacus pun.

Now – hurrah! – there’s reason for it to return as Alex Salmond takes it Eassie in his exclusive Courier column by praising the fresh produce available to be picked up in Angus. Okay. End of bad word play. For the moment.

On a more serious note, the former First Minister says it’s time for the Scottish Government to go even further than its Community Empowerment Bill.

The Aberdeenshire East MSP, and Gordon MP, argues in favour of Scotland’s rivers being put in control of its anglers in a bid to increase the number of rod and line catches.

It’ll be interesting to see how that goes down with land owners, given how controversial the current Bill is already proving.

Finally, Acropolis Now! Not my effort this time but the ex-SNP leader’s. Could the most powerful EU countries be forcing the Eurozone’s most economically troubled area into an alliance with Russia and China?

Salmond certainly thinks so and spells his view out clearly: “The people of Greece have suffered enough.”
