Meet David, a 34-year-old man who lives in a housing estate north of the Kingsway.
He has been unemployed for 18 months, having previously worked in a semi-skilled job at a factory which closed down.
David has a choice of three things he has planned for today.
~~[[Attend a meeting with the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP).->DWP]]~~

David makes his way to the DWP office in the city centre, catching the bus from his home for the seven-mile round trip.
The bus, arriving late, is held up in traffic on its way to town.
David has a choice: he can call the Job Centre ahead and let them know he will be late for his appointment, or he can hope the bus picks up the pace and arrives in time.

David decides to meet his dad, John, at the pub.
The pair have always had a strained relationship and have not seen each other in more than a year. John was, and still is, a heavy drinker - something which could also be said about David.
David’s mum was an alcoholic who killed herself 20 years ago – her alcoholism the result of untreated mental health issues.
David would watch his mum and dad fight, with John always leaving his wife a bruised and beaten mess.
As the night unfolds, and more alcohol is taken, the pair begin to argue about David’s mum.

Dundee is in the grips of a drugs death crisis.
The following interactive story puts you in the shoes of “David”, a young man in Dundee confronting the same choices facing so many in the city.
You will see how apparently simple choices can, for some, trigger a chain of events leading to devastating results.
Although fictionalised, his story is based on years of reporting in the city, backed up by official statistics.
There are links to resources embedded throughout this story.
As in life, some of the outcomes are unpredictable. Any time you see the 🎲 icon, it means the path you’re going down has an element of chance involved.

A Close Path is fiction - based on years of reporting in the local area as well as official statistics.
The character of David was chosen as he is in several of the demographics most affected by the drugs death crisis in Dundee. Not everyone who looks like David ends up dependent on drugs, and not all people who are dependent on drugs look like David. This is just one version of the many stories.
The 2019 Dundee Drugs Commission report asked the ISD Scotland statisticians to take a deeper dive into the drugs deaths statistics for Dundee. They found that when compared with Scotland Dundee had higher rates of deaths in:
- people aged 25-34
- people who live in the most deprived areas
- people in treatment
- people with mental illnesses
The report also noted that Dundee has the highest drug-related death rate amongst people who are unemployed of all local authorities in Scotland.
As you'll have gathered, David's descent into addiction started long before any of the choices he encountered during this story.
